How DEERC Began

The Dreamhill Estates Education Resource Center came into being after a neighborhood survey in 2009 showed clearly that a majority of neighbors were in favor of replacing the aging and dilapidated clubhouse with a new building that would make it easier, more comfortable and more attractive for neighborhood and family activities.

In response to the survey, the Dreamhill Estates Neighborhood Association (DENA) Board, which has been in operation since 1946, formed the Dreamhill Estates Education Resource Center (DEERC) which applied for and has received 501(c)3 non-profit status and has launched the fundraising program.

To date, we have pledges from 32 households totaling almost $30,000 and now that the Wall of Tiles is up, we’re hoping many more will sign up. All pledges are 100% tax-deductible.

Acquisition of the Clubhouse Property

The Dreamhill Estates Education Resource Center bid prevailed in the April 2013 auction of the clubhouse property as “surplus property.” The San Antonio Water System, which had owned the property for decades, was required by law to do.
Purchase of the property revealed that the access to the property is a private road belonging to the property rather than just a right of way.

Our neighborhood had previously held the property since the 1950s under a 99-year lease. Although we had to use precious funds to acquire the property, we believe this $2,500 was well spent and the outcome provides a long-term level of security we did not have before.

DEERC has applied for a property-tax exemption as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
