We don’t recommend that new tomato transplants get planted in the vegetable garden  until after March 15 but the  Rodeo Tomato variety for 2025 has been selected and  plants are available in limited numbers,  and it works very well to pot them up in February so they can begin their growth process by taking advantage of a sunny location out of the wind in a fertilized container. Gardeners  who register for  the “Potting Up the Rodeo Tomato Class” can learn about the potting up process and receive a “Potted Up Rodeo Tomato” if you register for the free class.

The first “Potting Up “ class is scheduled for Saturday , Feb 15 from 9:30 to 11:00 AM.

Monarch and Milkweed Classes Scheduled.   In 2024 we  hosted free classes that 210 Central Texas Gardeners attended to learn  what was known about  and to expand knowledge about Monarch Butterfly and Milkweed culture , especially in the San Antonio, New Braunfels area.  Among the cooperators in sponsoring the classes were Milberger’s Nursery, Dreamhill Estates Education Resource Center, the Bexar County Master Gardeners, the Comal County Master Gardeners,  the Gardening Volunteers of South Texas, Douglas King Seed Co., Native American Seed Co, and the Sinken  Eco Centro.

We germinated Milkweed Seed and distributed 400 plants of 6 native species that grow in the San Antonio, New Braunfels area – Showy Milkweed, Green Milkweed, Butterfly Weed,  Swamp Milkweed, Antelope Horn Milkweed,  and Zizotes, plus one exotic species, the Tropical Milkweed.

We had the most success with Zizotes and Tropical Milkweed  in terms of transplanting and plants maturing, and will be contacting many of the gardeners that received the other Milkweed species to see how they perform this spring.  Gardeners who attend  the classes this spring will again receive seeded containers if you agree to monitor and transplant the Milkweed.

This year’s Milkweed Class is scheduled for March 22 at 9:30 until 11:00AM.

If you are on our email list, you will receive an invitation to both this events. Each of the classes again has a capacity of 30 about attendees.
